The Pirates opened up on the road in Miami and swept the Marlins in a four-game series, winning 6-5, 7-2, 9-3 and 9-7.
They took their win streak to five games in Washington with an 8-4 victory, before finally seeing their perfect start end with a 5-3 defeat to the Nationals.
Pittsburgh rebounded immediately with a 7-4 win in their series finale, and then rebounded from a 5-2 defeat in their home opener against Baltimore with 5-4 and 3-2 wins over the Orioles.
The Pirates made it three wins in a row by beating Detroit 7-4 in their series opener, but were forced to settle for a split of the series as they lost the second game, 5-3.
Philadelphia Phillies Form
Philadelphia went into Wednesday’s game in St Louis having made a mixed start to the season, going 5-6 in their first 11 games.
The Phillies opened with back-to-back home defeats to Atlanta, losing 9-3 and 12-4, but they avoided being swept as they took the final meeting 5-4.
They dropped two games in their next series too, as they sandwiched a 9-4 win over Cincinnati with 6-3 and 5-1 defeats.
Philadelphia fared better when they went out on the road, beating Washington 4-0 and 5-2 before losing the final meeting 3-2.
The Phillies then split the first two games of the series in St Louis, winning 5-3 before losing 3-0.
Verdict
Pittsburgh are in good form and Jones has been good through his first two starts, so the Pirates make for an appealing underdog.
