Boston head back to New York having extended the series with a big victory in Game 5 on Wednesday night.
The Celtics gifted the upper-hand in this series to the Knicks as they dropped back-to-back games at home, losing 108-105 in overtime and 91-90 in regulation.
They rallied on the road with a 115-93 victory in New York, but found themselves on the brink of elimination when they lost 121-113 in Game 4.
To make matters worse, Boston lost Jayson Tatum in that defeat, but they were able to overcome that with a 127-102 home win to keep the series going.
The Celtics secured their place in the postseason by going 61-21 in the regular season, and in the first round they made routine work of Orlando as they won in five games.
New York Knicks Form
New York return home with another opportunity to clinch the series and knock out the defending champions.
The Knicks took control of the series when they went out on the road to stun Boston in back-to-back games, winning 108-105 in overtime and 91-90 in regulation.
They passed up on the chance to clinch at home as they were beaten 115-93 in Game 3, but they rebounded with a 121-113 victory in Game 4.
That gave New York the chance to wrap things up in Boston on Wednesday, but they failed to complete the job as they were beaten 127-102 by the Celtics.
The Knicks claimed their place in the playoffs by going 51-31 in the regular season, and in the first round they downed Detroit 4-2.
Verdict
Boston stood firm in the face of adversity in Game 5, but was that performance sustainable?
It took a career-best performance from a role player and a major contribution from the bench, so we have our doubts.
