The Pirates lost their season-opener against #13 NC State, 21-10, but rebounded over the next several weeks to win six of their next eight games.
That run included a three-game win streak that saw them beat Memphis 47-45, UCF 34-13 and BYU 27-24.
East Carolina’s run was then halted by a 27-25 defeat at Cincinnati and a 42-3 loss at home to Houston, but they did wrap up the regular season with a 49-46 victory over Temple.
The Pirates then followed that up in the Birmingham Bowl, running out 53-29 winners against Coastal Carolina.

Michigan then won the Big Ten Championship Game, running out 43-22 winners against Purdue.
However, the Wolverines’ dominant run came to a shuddering halt in the Fiesta Bowl, as they were beaten 51-45 by #3 TCU in a thrilling game.
