Washington State secured a Bowl Game appearance by winning eight of their 14 games in the regular season.
The Cougars opened with back-to-back wins, only to then cool off as they lost the next two.
They rallied to beat Colorado State 20-3 on the road, and although they lost their next two they were far from disgraced in a 24-21 loss to Ole Miss and a 22-20 defeat at Virginia.
Washington State got back to winning ways with a 28-7 victory against Toledo, and then bounced back from a 10-7 loss at Oregon State with a 28-3 win over Louisiana Tech.
The Cougars failed to make it back-to-back wins as they lost 24-20 at James Madison, but they did close out the regular season with a 32-8 success against Oregon State.
Utah State Form
Utah State go into this game on an inconsistent run of form that forced them to settle for a 6-6 record.
The Aggies opened with a non-conference win, before falling to a 44-22 defeat when they visited a Texas A&M team that went on to make the playoffs.
They rebounded to beat Air Force 49-30 in their Mountain West Conference opener, and then won another non-conference game before falling 55-35 at Vanderbilt.
Utah State returned to conference duty after that and lost 44-26 at Hawaii, before failing to build on a 30-25 win over San Jose State as they lost 33-14 at New Mexico.
The Aggies split their final four games too, following up a 51-14 win over Nevada with a 29-26 defeat at UNLV, and a 28-17 win at Fresno State with a 25-24 loss to Boise State.
Verdict
Washington State’s record may have been mixed, but they made their presence felt when they came up against some of the best teams in the nation.
They blew out Utah State last year too, so we are tempted by the Cougars and the plus-money.
