New York head out on the road for the first time in this series riding an eight-game win streak and having taken a 2-0 lead over Carolina.
The Rangers, who went 55-23-4 in the regular season to finish top of the Metropolitan Division, swept Washington in four games in the first round of the playoffs.
They began that series with 4-1 and 4-3 wins at home, before ruthlessly wrapping up the series with 3-1 and 4-2 victories in Washington.
New York then took an early lead in this series as they edged a seven-goal thriller with Carolina, beating the Hurricanes 4-3 at the Garden.
The Rangers repeated that victory in Game 2, but this time they needed overtime to beat Carolina 4-3.
Carolina Hurricanes Form
Carolina return home in need of a victory, having dropped the first two games of this series with the New York Rangers.
The Hurricanes, who finished second in the Metropolitan Division with a 52-23-7 record, beat the other New York team, the Islanders, in the first round.
They raced out to a 3-0 series lead as they followed up 3-1 and 5-3 home wins with a 3-2 victory over the Islanders on the road.
Carolina failed to complete the sweep as they lost 3-2 in overtime in Game 4, but they rebounded immediately from that loss to wrap up the series with a 6-3 victory.
However, the Hurricanes failed to follow that up in the opening two games of this series with the Rangers, as they lost 4-3 in regulation and 4-3 in overtime at Madison Square Garden.
Verdict
New York make for a very appealing underdog in the third game of this series.
The Rangers have repeatedly beaten Carolina in recent years, and it has been a while since they last lost at the PNC Arena.
