Alexander Zverev has lost each of his last seven meetings against Taylor Fritz and has also struggled against top-10 opponents this year. However, there may never be a better opportunity for him to break both of those trends. He arrives full of confidence on the back of a 10-match winning streak and the biggest success of his career at Roland Garros, while Fritz has been operating below his usual standards for much of the season.

Two Grass Specialists Collide

  • Zverev holds a 3–4 career record in grass-court semifinals.
  • He is currently on a 10-match winning streak on tour.
  • Fritz owns a 6–1 record in grass-court semifinals.
  • He holds a 3–7 career record against Top 10 players on grass.

German Edges Collignon in Tiebreak Battle

Alexander Zverev moved into the semifinals in Halle after defeating Raphael Collignon in two tiebreak sets, 7-6, 7-6. Both players fired 14 aces and neither dropped serve throughout the match, but Zverev's experience proved decisive in the key moments of both tiebreaks.

This is Zverev's seventh semifinal appearance in Halle and his fourth consecutive one. He converted his first two semifinal runs here into finals in 2016 and 2017 but has fallen at this stage in each of his last three appearances, losing to Alexander Bublik in 2023, Hubert Hurkacz in 2024 and Daniil Medvedev in 2025.

Earlier this season, Zverev endured a six-match losing streak in semifinals. However, he recently ended that run by reaching the final in Rome and then went one step further by lifting the Roland Garros title, the biggest trophy of his career.

The German owns a 3-4 record in grass-court semifinals. Notably, all three of his victories at this stage on grass have come on home soil in Germany, a trend he will hope continues this week.

Fritz Gets Revenge on Shelton in Halle

Taylor Fritz gained revenge after defeating Ben Shelton in three tiebreak sets to reach the semifinals in Halle, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. The victory ended a three-match losing streak against Shelton, including defeats in the finals of Dallas and Stuttgart earlier this season.

The American will be pleased with his progress this week considering he had failed to win a match in either of his previous appearances in Halle, in 2016 and 2019.

This is the eighth grass-court semifinal of Fritz's career, and he has won six of his previous seven matches at this stage. His only defeat came against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon last year.

Fritz has now won six of his seven grass-court matches this season, including a runner-up finish in Stuttgart last week. That run is particularly encouraging after the injury issues that disrupted parts of his campaign. He also limited his clay-court schedule to focus on recovery, and that decision appears to be paying dividends during the grass swing.

Verdict

If Zverev can overcome the mental hurdle created by his poor head-to-head record against Fritz, he has every chance of turning the matchup around this time. Backing Zverev to win, Zverev to win in straight sets, and a tiebreak to be played all look like attractive options.
