Ben Shelton has not been operating at a particularly convincing level in recent weeks, and he now faces the added challenge of transitioning to a different surface in what will be his first grass-court match of the season.
That could leave him vulnerable, especially in the early stages, against Marcos Giron, who arrives with confidence after a solid straight-sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut in the opening round.

American Looks to End Recent Slump
Ben Shelton arrives this week with a shortage of confidence after a disappointing run of results. He has won only two matches across his last four tournaments, with three of those campaigns ending in deciding-set defeats.

The American now turns his attention to the grass season. He has played 11 tour-level events on the surface and suffered opening-round exits in five of them, including Stuttgart in 2024. However, he improved on that result in his next appearance here, reaching the semifinals, which remains his best result on grass.

Giron Starts Grass Swing Positively
Marcos Giron defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6, 7-5 to reach the second round in Stuttgart. He fired 25 aces and saved three of the four break points he faced during the match.
It was Giron's first tour-level victory since Indian Wells in March. He began the season with semifinal runs in Auckland and Hong Kong, but his results declined afterward, managing only two tour-level wins before this week.
In his previous three main-draw appearances in Stuttgart, Giron reached the second round only once, losing to Jack Draper in three sets. He now has an opportunity to improve on that record and put together consecutive wins for the first time in several months.
