Daniel Altmaier is enjoying the best grass-court swing of his career, having reached the semifinals in Halle last week and putting together a series of impressive performances on the surface. The German has won three of his five grass-court matches so far and appears far more comfortable on grass than in previous seasons. While Altmaier remains an inconsistent and unpredictable player, his current level cannot be ignored.

Kovacevic has struggled to produce the same level of consistency in recent weeks, and the gap in form between the two players is difficult to overlook. With Altmaier arriving full of confidence after a breakthrough run on grass, he looks well positioned to take advantage.

Altmaier Seeks Better Grass Return

  • Altmaier has never cleared the opening round more than once in a grass-court season.
  • He owns an 11–11 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
  • Kovacevic is currently on a four-match losing streak in main-draw matches.
  • He holds a 14–14 record against players outside the Top 50.

Daniel Altmaier Turns Season Around on Grass

Daniel Altmaier arrives in Eastbourne after the best grass-court result of his career in Halle, where he reached the semifinals. The German defeated both Hubert Hurkacz and Daniil Medvedev in consecutive three-set matches before his run came to an end.

Before Halle, Altmaier had not recorded multiple main-draw wins on grass since 2022. He now has the opportunity to build on that breakthrough performance as he makes his Eastbourne debut this week.

The result is even more notable given how difficult his season began. Altmaier opened the year with an eight-match losing streak and had recorded multiple main-draw wins at only two ATP events before the grass season, reaching the quarterfinals in Hamburg and Bucharest.

Kovacevic Arrives After Mixed Run of Form

Alexander Kovacevic's struggles on grass have continued this season. He has played two events on the surface and suffered first-round defeats in both, including one as a lucky loser at Queen's Club. His only ATP-level main-draw win on grass came in Newport in 2024, where he went on to reach the quarterfinals.

Those results have been disappointing following an encouraging semifinal run in Hamburg last month. That performance provided a boost after an inconsistent start to the season, during which he found it difficult to put together deep runs on a regular basis.

Kovacevic has competed in 19 tournaments this year and has recorded multiple main-draw wins at only three of them. His best results include a semifinal appearance in Brisbane, a third-round run at Indian Wells, and the recent semifinal in Hamburg. He now makes another main-draw appearance looking to improve his record on grass.

Verdict

If Altmaier can reproduce the level he showed in Halle, the current odds look very generous. Backing Altmaier to win, Altmaier to win in straight sets, and Altmaier to cover the -2.5 games handicap are all worthy of consideration based on the recent form of both players.
