Joao Fonseca has consistently been competitive against top-level opposition this year, even though he has lost most of his encounters against top-10 players. This matchup against Ben Shelton, however, presents a genuine opportunity to reverse that trend. Shelton has looked unusually vulnerable at times this season and has not consistently produced the level expected of him.

The pressure of defending his title could add another layer of difficulty for Shelton, while Fonseca has nothing to lose as the underdog and can play with greater freedom. If the Brazilian can maintain his aggressive level, he has a real chance of securing a breakthrough top-10 victory.

Fonseca Looks To Turn Promise Into A Deep Run

  • Joao Fonseca has a 1–1 record in Round of 16 matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 2–6 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Ben Shelton has a 6–3 record in Round of 16 matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 24–10 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Fonseca Looks to Extend His Deep Montreal Run

Joao Fonseca moved into the fourth round in Montreal after defeating his opponent in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. He was trailing by a break in the first set but made a comeback to seal the match comfortably in straight sets.

This is his third round-of-16 appearance at Masters 1000 level in his career. His previous two came this year, and he converted only one of them into a quarterfinal, reaching that stage in Monte Carlo.

The Brazilian has produced several notable results this year, including quarterfinal appearances in Monte Carlo, Munich and at the French Open, along with the fourth round in Indian Wells and the third round at Wimbledon. These results have helped him stay inside the top 30 in the rankings.

Shelton Targets a Strong Title Defense

Ben Shelton defeated Zizou Bergs in straight sets to reach the fourth round in Montreal, 6-3, 6-2. He also defeated Jenson Brooksby in straight sets earlier this week.

Shelton will be relieved with back-to-back straight-set wins, considering 10 of his previous 11 matches had gone the distance, including his opening-round loss at Wimbledon.

The American has won three titles across all surfaces this year, but early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon left him close to dropping out of the top 10 in the rankings. He is now defending his Montreal title this week.

Shelton has a 6-3 record in round-of-16 matches at Masters 1000 level and is currently on a four-match winning streak at this stage. His most recent loss in a round-of-16 match came in Shanghai in 2024.

Verdict

Shelton's current inconsistency makes Fonseca an appealing underdog, particularly given the Brazilian's ability to compete with elite opposition. Backing Joao Fonseca to win and Fonseca to win at least one set.
