Fonseca Eyes Deep Madrid Run

Joao Fonseca moved into the third round in Madrid without playing, as Marin Cilic withdrew due to food poisoning. With that bye, he achieved his best result at the event after back-to-back second-round exits in the last two years.

After a slow start to the season, he has found strong form in recent weeks by reaching the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo and Munich, along with the fourth round in Indian Wells. Those results have pushed him close to a return to the top 30.

Fonseca enters this clash with a 2-2 record in third-round matches at Masters level, with both of those wins coming this year. He now looks to continue that momentum in Madrid.

Jodar Continues Rapid Rise

Rafael Jodar continued his strong run in Madrid by defeating Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round. Before this match, he had never beaten a top-20 player in his career.

The 19-year-old started the 2025 season ranked outside the top 900, but his impressive performances at tour level this year helped him make his top-50 debut recently.

He has now won 10 of his 11 clay matches this season, with his only defeat coming against Arthur Fils from a set up in the Munich semifinals last week. After making his Masters debut only in Indian Wells last month, he is already playing his second third-round match at this level.
