Taylor Fritz endured a difficult clay swing, with both his form and fitness falling short of expectations, but that is also helping to create a very attractive price on him as the tour returns to grass. This is a surface on which Fritz has consistently produced some of his best tennis, and he arrives in Stuttgart as the defending champion.

Meanwhile, Martin Landaluce is not in an ideal situation after coming through a physically demanding French Open campaign that likely took plenty out of him.

Fritz Looks To Build Momentum

  • Martin Landaluce holds a 3–2 career record in second-round matches at tour-level events.
  • He owns a 0–2 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Taylor Fritz has a 3–1 record in opening-round matches at Stuttgart.
  • He holds a 10–3 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.

Young Spaniard Continues Breakthrough Season

Martin Landaluce came from a set down to defeat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the second round in Stuttgart on his tournament debut. He also trailed by a break in the deciding set before turning the match around.

It was Landaluce's first tour-level win on grass. The Spaniard only started competing regularly on the surface last year, reaching the quarterfinals in Ilkley and the semifinals in Nottingham at Challenger level before falling in Wimbledon qualifying.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed some of the best results of his career this season, climbing to a career-high ranking of No. 58. His standout performances include quarterfinal runs in Miami and Rome, along with a third-round appearance at Roland Garros. He will now try to carry that form into the rest of the grass season.

Fritz Returns to Defend Stuttgart Crown

Taylor Fritz has been dealing with a recurring knee injury that has significantly affected his progress this season. He skipped parts of the clay swing to focus on recovery, but has yet to rediscover his best form since returning to competition.

The American reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, the final in Dallas, the fourth round in Miami and the quarterfinals in Delray Beach earlier this year.

Since Miami, however, he has played only two clay-court events and lost in the opening match at both. He arrives on a three-match losing streak and is in danger of dropping out of the Top 10.

Fritz returns to Stuttgart as the defending champion and will be hoping the grass courts can help him regain confidence. This is his fifth main-draw appearance at the event, where he also reached the quarterfinals in 2023 before lifting the title last year.

Verdict

With the surface change working heavily in his favor and a clear edge in grass-court experience, Fritz should be well positioned to capitalize. Backing Fritz to win, Fritz to win in straight sets, and a tiebreak to be played all fit the likely match scenario.
