Nick Kyrgios looked very much at home in his first match of the grass-court season earlier this week. Despite it being only his first competitive match since January, he appeared extremely comfortable on the surface, which is hardly surprising given how much success he has enjoyed on grass throughout his career.

Kyrgios Eyes Long-Awaited Quarterfinal

  • Shimabukuro has yet to register multiple main-draw wins at a tour-level event.
  • He is currently on a six-match winning streak against Australian players.
  • Nick Kyrgios holds a 2–0 record in second-round matches at Stuttgart.
  • He is looking to reach his first tour-level quarterfinal since Tokyo 2022.

Shimabukuro Claims First ATP Grass-Court Win

Sho Shimabukuro defeated Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round in Stuttgart. He dropped serve just once and won 88% of his first-serve points in an impressive display.

It was Shimabukuro's first tour-level win on grass and his third victory of the week after coming through qualifying. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Challenger last week and is now one win away from matching that result.

Before this week, the Japanese player had cleared the opening-round hurdle at tour level on four occasions, but each of those runs ended in the second round. Having already collected five wins on grass this season, he will be hoping to go a step further this time.

Kyrgios Makes Strong Return in Stuttgart

Nick Kyrgios defeated Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round in Stuttgart. He fired eight aces and did not face a single break point throughout the match.

It was an impressive display from the Australian, who has spent much of the last three years away from the tour due to recurring knee and wrist injuries. Those setbacks prevented him from putting together a sustained comeback, making this performance all the more encouraging.

Kyrgios is now looking to record multiple tour-level wins for the first time in several years and reach his first quarterfinal since Tokyo 2022. He has played two previous second-round matches in Stuttgart and converted both into semifinal appearances.

Verdict

Against an inexperienced opponent like Sho Shimabukuro, Kyrgios should be able to make full use of his grass-court strengths. Backing Kyrgios to win and Kyrgios to win in straight sets both fit the expected match script.
