They backed that up by beating Memphis 17-12 and St Louis 27-15, before seeing their perfect start end with a 24-18 loss to San Antonio.
DC responded with a 37-33 victory in Arlington, only to then lose 38-14 when they visited Michigan.
The Defenders have not lost since though, booking their trip to the postseason with a 32-25 victory in San Antonio and a 33-30 win at home to Arlington.

Houston enter this game on the back of a couple of defeats that dropped them to 3-5 and ended their hopes of making the playoffs.
The Roughnecks opened with back-to-back defeats, losing 31-6 at home to St Louis and 11-9 on the road in Arlington.
They finally got off the mark in Week 3, winning 18-17 in Memphis, only to immediately return to losing ways with a 23-16 defeat to Birmingham
Houston kept their postseason hopes alive as they backed up a 27-3 win in San Antonio with a 21-20 success at home to Memphis, but they were unable to maintain that momentum.
The Roughnecks were beaten 33-25 in Birmingham, and then suffered a 30-18 defeat at home to Michigan.
Verdict
DC are the better team, but the confirmation that they will play on the road in the conference championship, even if they finish top of the division, makes this game is a ‘dead rubber’.
