New York finished fifth in the East division with a 27-23-6 to finish with 60 points.

The Rangers went 13-12-3 on the road last year.

New York replaced coach Dan Quinn with 63-year-old Gerard Gallant, who posted a 118-75-20 record over 213 games from 2017-2020. Gallant is 270-216-51 in his career.

New York added several key pieces this offseason, including forwards Barclay Goodrow, Sammy Blais and Ryan Reaves along with defensemen Jarred Tinordi and Patrik Nemeth.

The Rangers lost F Pavel Buchnevich, FBrett Howden, C Colin Blackwell (espansio draft) and D Brendan Smith this offseason.

C Mika Zibanejad, who registered a career-best 1.32 points in 2019-20, posted 24 goals along with 26 assists for 50 points last season.

G Igor Shesterkin, who signed the second highest contract for a goaltender in NHL history in August, posted a 16-14-3 record, along with a 2.62 GAA, a .916 Save percentage, and 2 shutouts last year.

Washington Capitals Form

Washington has made the playoffs over the last seven years and 13 of the past 14 seasons.

The Capitals went 36-15-5 last year to finish second in the East division with 77 points, marking the eighth consecutive season that they have finished with at least that many points.

Washington lost to Boston 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs in 2021.

The Capitals went 17-8-3 at home a year ago.

The Capitals added just one key player in G Vitek Vanecek, who was selected by Seattle in the 2021 NHL expansion draft, went 21-10-4 with a 2.69 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and two shutouts in 37 games (36 starts) for the Capitals last season.

Washington lost several key players this offseason, including defensemen Zdeno Chara and Brenden Dillon as well as goaltenders Craig Anderson and Henrik Lundqvist.

C Evgeny Kuznetsov had nine goals and 20 assists while also posting + 7  net rating last year.

C Alex Ovechkin, who is listed as questionable for tonight’s game with a lower body injury, finished last season with 24 goals (T-13th) and 18 assists (T-145th) for 42 points – all stats are career-lows

The Rangers have a fresh start and plenty of young talent. Meanwhile, the Capitals may not have star Alex Oveckin tonight and their goaltending is a major question mark.
