Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) defends his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring magazine super-middleweight world titles against John Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday, May 6.

Alvarez has established himself as boxing’s pound-for-pound number one over the past several years, rebounding from his first career loss, to Floyd Mayweather Jr, by winning multiple world titles at multiple weights.
His bid to claim the WBA (Super) light-heavyweight title ended in disappointment last May, when he lost for only the second time in his career, but the Mexican legend bounced back from that defeat to beat Gennady Golovkin in their trilogy fight last September, successfully retaining his super-middleweight titles.
Alvarez now looks to follow up that successful defence with another in his homecoming fight. ‘Canelo’ has not fought on home soil since stopping Kermit Cintron back in November 2011, so he will be eager to put on a show for the home fans.
Looking to spoil the party is John Ryder, who has enjoyed a late career surge after losing multiple title fights in the past, at both domestic and world title level.
His previous attempt to become a world champion ended in failure when he dropped a decision to Callum Smith in November 2019, but the Londoner has bounced back with a four-fight win streak that includes a shock win over Daniel Jacobs last year.
But can Ryder top that by springing one of the biggest upsets in boxing history here, or will Alvarez delight his fellow countrymen and claim his 59th professional victory on his home soil?
