A star-studded field of the world's elite golfers have converged on the greens of Bay Hill to compete for the Arnold Palmer Invitational title. Who will emerge as the winner in Orlando this weekend?
Kurt Kitayama is back at Bay Hill to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Harris English and Rory McIlroy in 2023.
Past and present major winners that will tee off on Thursday include Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Matt Fitzpatrick, Lucas Glover, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas,
These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.
Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland has had a relatively quiet beginning to his season on the PGA Tour, finishing T22 at The Sentry, T58 at the AT&T Pebble Beach and T19 at the Genesis Invitational.
Before that, Hovland was in tremendous touch during the latter half of last year, with results of victory at the Memorial Tournament, 19th at the US Open, T25 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T13 at the Open Championship and T13 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
He then won the BMW International and Tour Championship, was 5th at the BMW PGA Championship, T2 at the DP World Tour Championship and 10th at the Hero World Challenge.
The world's number four-ranked golfer has made five appearances at Bay Hill, with results of T40 in 2019, T42 in 2020, T49 in 2021, T2 in 2022 and T10 in 2023.
Hovland has been thereabouts in his last two starts at Bay Hill and can make the frame come Sunday.
Patrick Cantlay
Patrick Cantlay has been in solid form on the PGA Tour during 2024, placing T12 at The Sentry, T52 at the American Express, T56 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T11 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T4 at the Genesis Invitational.
Before those performances, Cantlay had been in consistent form, finishing T14 at the US Open, T4 at the Travelers Championship, MC at the Genesis Scottish Open, T33 at the Open Championship, 2nd at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T15 at the BMW Championship, and 5th at the Tour Championship.
The world's sixth-ranked golfer placed a credible T4 overall at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational on debut.
Cantlay can convert his consistent results into a winning one in Florida this weekend.
Jason Day
Jason Day has been in great shape on the PGA Tour since the beginning of the year, placing T10 at the Sentry, T34 at the American Express, MC at the Farmers Insurance Open, T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 9th at the Genesis Invitational.
Additional highlights achieved by Day during 2023 include finishing T18 at the American Express, T7 at the Farmers Insurance Open, 5th at the WM Phoenix Open, T19 at the Players Championship, T5 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T2 at the Open Championship and 11th at the Hero World Challenge.
The Australian has compiled a solid record at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, with results of T17 in 2015, victory in 2016, T23 in 2017, T22 in 2018, W/D in 2020, T31 in 2021 and T10 in 2023 in his last seven appearances.
Day has threatened to put in a big performance lately and can lift the trophy in Orlando come Sunday.
Matthieu Pavon
Matthieu Pavon has enjoyed a successful start to life on the PGA Tour, placing T7 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T39 at the American Express, victory at the Farmers Insurance Open, 3rd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T28 at the Genesis Invitational.
Before those results, Pavon had been playing equally as well on the DP World Tour towards the end of last year, with results of T6 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, victory at the Open de Espana, T9 at the Andalucia Masters, T47 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, T15 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and T5 at the DP World Tour Championship.
The 31-year-old Frenchman is debuting at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Pavon has been at the top of his game lately and could cause an upset at Bay Hill this weekend.
Verdict
Cantlay has been showing signs he is about to secure another PGA Tour title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this weekend.
Day has tasted success at Bay Hill before and could surprise the others with the victory come Sunday.
Pavon has done nothing wrong lately and can feature prominently in Orlando this weekend.
