LIV Golf Series and players return to Asia for the inaugural Hong Kong Open. Who will walk away with the honours at the Hong Kong Golf Club this weekend?

The Hong Kong Golf Club has been the host venue for the Hong Kong Open since 1959, which has featured regularly on the Asian Tour and European Tour over the years.

Current top-ten in the individual points standings after three rounds:

1. Joaquin Niemann 80 pts
2. Dustin Johnson 54.33 pts
3. Jon Rahm 49 pts
4. Talor Gooch 41.83 pts
5. Louis Oosthuizen 38 pts
6. Sergio Garcia 32.42 pts
7. Bryson DeChambeau 27.66 pts
=8. Peter Uihlein 27 pts
=8. Charl Schwartzel 27 pts
10. Brooks Koepka 26.83 pts

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Talor Gooch

Talor Gooch has been in great shape during the opening few tournaments on the LIV Golf League this season, placing T15 at Mayakoba, T2 in Las Vegas and T6 in Jeddah.

Other notable results achieved by Gooch last season include winning in Adelaide, Singapore, and Valderrama. Additionally, he placed T13 in Tucson, T15 in DC, T7 in Greenbrier, T11 in Bedminster and T5 in Chicago.

The three-time LIV Golf Tour winner finished T42 at the 2023 Hong Kong Open.

Gooch has not been far off from winning again and will have a chance if he can replicate his recent displays on the golf course.

Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau has enjoyed an excellent start to the new season on the LIV Golf Tour, finishing T25 in Mayakoba, T9 in Las Vegas and 4th in Jeddah last weekend.

Before those results, DeChambeau finished last year with a flurry of victories in the LIV Golf League, lifting the trophy in Greenbrier and Chicago in four tournaments.

Additional highlights achieved by DeChambeu last season include placing T5 in Tulsa, T4 at the PGA Championship, T9 in DC, T20 at the US Open, 2nd at Valderrama and T11 in London.

DeChambeau comes into this LIV Golf Invitational Series event in top form and will be challenging for the title come Sunday.

Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith did not have the best start to his season on the DP World Tour when missing the cut at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship but bounced back with results of T17 at the ISPS Handa Australian Open, T8 in Mayakoba, T15 in Las Vegas and T41 in Jeddah last weekend.

Other prominent performances achieved by Smith last season include placing T3 in Adelaide, T6 in Singapore, T2 in Tulsa, T9 at the PGA Championship, T9 in DC, 4th at the US Open, victory in London and Bedminster.

The former Open Champion finished runner-up at the Hong Kong Open on the Asian Tour in 2023.

Smith will fancy his chances to take home the winner's cheque after his previous performance at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

Peter Uihlein

Peter Uihlein has had a solid start to his year on the LIV Golf Tour, finishing T51 in Mayakoba, T2 in Las Vegas, 6th at the International Series in Oman (Asian Tour) and T37 in Jeddah.

Other noteworthy results achieved by Uihlein last season include placing 2nd in Mayakoba, T10 in Tucson, T8 in Orlando, T7 in Adelaide, T11 in Singapore, T15 in DC, T17 in London and T5 in Chicago.

The 34-year-old American contested the Hong Kong Open (Asian Tour) in November last year, placing T8 overall.

Uihlein has had two top-ten places in his previous four tournaments and could cause an upset this weekend.

Format

An invitational field of 54 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $50,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 13-four-man team (four players each and two wild-card players) format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Gooch has the form to win the latest tournament on the LIV Golf Tour schedule.

DeChambeau can convert his recent results into a winning performance in Hong Kong.

Smith went close to winning at the Hong Kong Open in November and will look to go one better this weekend.

Uihlein has been thereabouts and is the long-shot value bet at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
