Houston Astros Form
Houston entered this series having slipped to 7-16 on the season with eight defeats in their previous 11 games.
The Astros were hoping that back-to-back wins at Texas would be the catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes after a rough start to the campaign.
However, they were then swept at Kansas City, losing 4-3, 11-2 and 13-3, and then fell to a 12-8 defeat when they hosted Texas.
Houston rebounded with 9-2 and 8-5 wins over the Rangers, only to again fail to build on wins over their state rivals, this time losing 6-1, 6-2 and 5-4 at home to Atlanta.
The Astros avoided a fourth consecutive loss by winning 5-3 in Washington, but they dropped the final two games against then Nationals, 5-4 and 6-0.
Chicago Cubs Form
Chicago came into this series on the back of a loss, but having enjoyed a decent run of form with six wins in their previous nine games.
The Cubs started this sequence by replying to a 4-2 series-opening defeat in Seattle with 4-1 and 3-2 wins over the Mariners.
They then moved on to Arizona for a three-game series with the Diamondbacks, and sandwiched a 12-11 defeat with 3-2 and 5-3 victories.
Chicago returned home after that, with a four-game series against Miami on tap, and they made a successful start as they beat the Marlins 8-3.
The Cubs dropped two of the next three games though, losing 3-2 and 6-3 either side of a 5-3 victory.
Verdict
Chicago are in much better form and have the edge at starting pitcher for this one, so we are backing the Cubs to take down the Astros again.
