The Chippewas opened the season by splitting four non-conference matchups, and kicked off their MAC campaign with a 24-13 victory over Eastern Michigan.
They failed to follow that up as they lost 28-22 at Akron, but they rebounded over the next couple of weeks to beat Bowling Green 27-6 on the road and Massachusetts 38-13 at home.
Central Michigan missed out on a third straight win as they lost 24-21 at Western Michigan, only to issue an immediate response with a 38-19 win over Buffalo.
The Chippewas made it back-to-back successes as they beat Kent State 28-16 on the road, only to close out the regular season with a 21-3 defeat to Toledo.
Northwestern Form
Northwestern lost four of their final five games of the season, but a 6-6 record was enough to ensure Bowl game eligibility.
The Wildcats kicked off the campaign by splitting a couple of non-conference games, and then dropped their opening Big Ten matchup as they lost 34-14 to Oregon.
They bounced back to beat UCLA 17-14 a week later, and then backed up a non-conference blowout win over UL-Monroe by beating Big Ten foes Penn State, 22-12, and Purdue, 19-0.
Northwestern’s form collapsed after that though, as they followed up road defeats to Nebraska, 28-21, and USC, 38-17, with a 24-22 home defeat to Michigan.
The Wildcats secured a Bowl invite as they edged Minnesota 38-35 in their home finale, before wrapping up the regular season with a 20-13 defeat at Illinois.
Verdict
Northwestern will be battle-hardened after another tough Big Ten schedule, and they will be fired up for this Bowl game having earned their place in such spectacular fashion.
