The Tigers entered the season in AP’s top 10, but lost their season opener to LSU, 17-10, and then underwhelmed massively in a 27-16 win at home to Troy.
They opened their ACC campaign after that and dug themselves into an early hole as they lost 24-21 at Georgia Tech and 34-21 at home to Syracuse.
Clemson finally got off the mark as they beat North Carolina 38-10 and Boston College 41-10 on the road, but they failed to maintain that momentum as they lost back-to-back home games, 35-24 to SMU and 46-45 to Duke.
The Tigers finished strong though, beating Florida State 24-10 and Louisville 20-19, and then backed that up with non-conference wins over Furman, 45-10, and South Carolina, 28-14.
Penn State Form
Penn State also wrapped up the regular season on a decent run of form, winning their final three games to finish 6-6.
The Nittany Lions kicked off the campaign as the number two team in the nation, according to AP, and they won their first three non-conference games.
Their form nose-dived when their Big Ten schedule began though, as a 30-24 loss to Oregon proved to be the start of a six-game losing skid that cost James Franklin his job.
Penn State went on to lose 42-37 at UCLA, 22-21 to Northwestern, 25-24 at Iowa, 38-14 at Ohio State and 27-24 to Indiana.
The Nittany Lions finished strong though, as they sandwiched a 37-10 home win against Nebraska with road wins over Michigan State, 28-10, and Rutgers, 40-36.
