Kennesaw State compiled a 10-3 record and won the Conference USA Championship to earn themselves a Bowl game invite.
The Owls opened with a couple of tough non-conference losses, but won their next two games to go into their conference schedule with some momentum.
They made a flying start to their Conference USA slate, winning each of their first five games starting with a 24-16 win over Middle Tennessee State.
Kennesaw State backed up that victory by beating Louisiana Tech 35-7, Florida International 45-26, UTEP 33-20 and New Mexico State 24-21, before seeing their run end with a 35-26 defeat at Jacksonville State.
The Owls rebounded to close out the regular season by beating Missouri State 41-34 and Liberty 48-42, before claiming the Conference USA Championship with a 19-15 win over Jacksonville State.
Western Michigan Form
Western Michigan earned their place in Bowl season by winning nine of their 13 games and claiming the MAC Championship.
The Broncos kicked off the campaign with a run of three non-conference defeats, before getting off the mark in their MAC opener against Toledo, winning 14-13.
They backed that up with a non-conference victory, before returning to MAC duty to beat Massachusetts 21-3 and Ball State 42-0.
Western Michigan failed to make it to 4-0 in conference action, losing 26-17 to Miami Ohio, but they rebounded with a four-game tear that saw them beat Central Michigan 24-21, Ohio 17-13, Northern Illinois 35-19 and Eastern Michigan 31-21.
The Broncos then made it five wins in a row as they beat Miami Ohio 23-13 to clinch the MAC Championship.
Verdict
Western Michigan’s defense was a big reason for their MAC championship success, and it can be a key reason why they now add Bowl Game honours.
