That all changed in the season opener though, as they downed top-ranked Texas 14-7 to claim top spot.
Ohio State backed that up with non-conference wins over Grambling State, 70-0, and Ohio, 37-9, before kicking off their Big Ten schedule with a 24-6 win at Washington.
The Buckeyes then went on to beat Minnesota 42-3, Illinois 34-16, Wisconsin 34-0 and Penn State 38-14 to reach 8-0 and retain the number one spot in the polls.
Purdue Form
Purdue return home having seen their losing skid reach seven games to leave them with a 2-7 record.
The Boilermakers opened with back-to-back non-conference games, and ran out 31-0 winners against Ball State and 34-17 victors against Southern Illinois.
They failed to maintain that form in their Big Ten opener though, as they fell 33-17 to USC, and a week later they suffered a 56-30 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame.
Purdue then went out on the road to lose 27-20 in Minnesota and 19-8 at Northwestern, before returning home for a 27-24 defeat to Rutgers.
The Boilermakers’ slide then reached seven games last weekend as they were beaten 21-16 at Michigan.
Verdict
Ohio State have been steamrollering over the opposition this season, and that is unlikely to change here.
Purdue do not have the talent to lay a glove on the Buckeyes, so we expect to see something similar to the 45-0 rout we saw when the two teams met last year.
