They came up short against Georgia again in the conference championship, losing 22-19, but they had done enough to secure a place in the revamped playoffs.
Texas downed Clemson in the first round, winning 38-24, and they advanced from the Peach Bowl thanks to a 39-31 victory over Arizona State.
However, the Longhorns’ run was ended at the semi-final stage, as they were beaten 28-14 by Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.

That left only Notre Dame standing between the Buckeyes and the national crown, and they would not be denied as they beat the Fighting Irish 34-23.
