Colorado head back out on the road having forced this winner-takes-all clash with their home win in Game 6.
The Avalanche made a dream start to the playoffs as they blew out the Stars in Dallas, winning 5-1 in the series-opener.
They failed to back that up as they lost 4-3 in overtime on the road and 2-1 in overtime at home, but they rallied with a 4-0 home win to knot up the series at 2-2.
Colorado then found themselves on the brink of elimination thanks to a 6-2 loss in Game 5, only to fend off a postseason exit for the time being with a 7-4 victory at home on Thursday.
The Avalanche sealed their spot in the playoffs by putting together a 49-29-4 record to finish third in the Central Division.

Dallas return home with another opportunity to clinch the series after passing up that chance on the road.
The Stars made a rough start to the series as they lost 5-1 at home, but they rallied to take the series lead with a couple of overtime victories, winning 4-3 and 2-1.
They surrendered that lead with a 4-0 defeat in Game 4 in Colorado, but regained it with a 6-2 home win in Game 5.
That gave Dallas the chance to wrap up the series in Colorado on Thursday, but they failed to take that chance as they were beaten 7-4 by the Avalanche.
The Stars secured their spot in the playoffs by compiling a 50-26-6 regular-season record to finish second in the Central Division.
Verdict
Dallas are the underdogs on their home ice, but there are reasons to like their chances.
Pete DeBoer has shown he knows how to manage this situation, and despite a rough run late in the regular season the Stars have been in decent form at home for the past couple of months.
