Minnesota booked their place in the playoffs by putting together a 45-30-7 record to finish fourth in the Central Division.
The Wild rallied late in the regular season, as they responded to a four-game losing run by winning four of their final five games.
Their rough run started in late March as they lost 5-2 and 3-2 to New Jersey, and continued at the start of April as they fell 5-4 to the New York Rangers and 3-1 to the New York Islanders.
Minnesota steadied the ship with back-to-back overtime wins, beating Dallas 3-2 and San Jose 8-7, only to then suffer a 4-2 defeat when they visited Calgary.
The Wild issued a quick response though, recording 3-2 overtime victories against Vancouver and Anaheim.
They failed to make it three-in-a-row however, as they were beaten 4-2 by Vegas in the opening game of this series.
Vegas Golden Knights Form
Vegas secured another playoff berth by finishing atop the Pacific Division with a 50-22-10 regular-season record.
The Golden Knights also came into the postseason on a good run of form, having won five of their final seven games.
They started April with back-to-back defeats, but rallied on the road to beat Calgary 3-2 in overtime and Vancouver 3-2 in regulation.
Vegas then rebounded from a 3-2 shootout defeat to Colorado with a 2-1 win against Seattle and a 5-3 victory over Nashville.
The Golden Knights failed to make it three-in-a-row as they lost 5-4 in Calgary, but they bounced back to win their regular season finale, beating Vancouver 4-1.
They followed that up in the opening game of this playoff series, as they beat Minnesota 4-2 over the weekend.
Verdict
Vegas continued their recent dominance of Minnesota in the opening game of this series.
We expect more of the same here as the Golden Knights open up a two-game cushion ahead of the trip to Minnesota.
