Ottawa secured their spot in the playoffs by compiling a 45-30-7 record to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division.
The Senators entered the postseason on a good run of form too, having won six of their previous eight games.
They began this good run with a three-game win streak that saw them beat Tampa Bay 2-1, Florida 3-0 and Columbus 4-0 at home.
Ottawa then rebounded from the 5-2 defeat in Columbus with a 5-2 victory over Montreal, and backed it up by beating Philadelphia 4-3 in overtime.
The Senators lost their penultimate game to Chicago, 4-3 in overtime, only to rebound in their regular season finale by beating Carolina 7-5.
However, they failed to follow that up in the opening game of this series, losing 6-2 in Ottawa at the weekend.
Toronto Maple Leafs Form
Toronto earned their trip to the playoffs by putting together a 52-26-4 regular-season record to finish atop the Atlantic Division.
The Maple Leafs come into the postseason in great form too, having won nine of their previous 10 games.
They ended March with back-to-back wins, winning 3-1 in Los Angeles and 3-2 at Anaheim, and began April with two more, beating Florida 3-2 and Columbus 5-0.
Toronto’s winning run was ended by a 3-1 loss at Florida, but they responded immediately with a 4-3 overtime victory at Tampa Bay to spark a five-game tear.
The Maple Leafs then beat Montreal 1-0 in overtime, before downing Carolina 4-1, Buffalo 4-0 and Detroit 4-3 in overtime.
Their win streak then reached six games in the opening game of this series, as they blew out Ottawa 6-2.
Verdict
Toronto defied their recent bad record against Ottawa by brutally taking them down in Game 1.
The Maple Leafs may have finally begun to exorcise some postseason demons, so we are backing them for another win tonight.
