Alex Molcan is the more experienced player on European clay and has the tools to compete strongly in these conditions, but the concern is the number of matches he has already played this week. That workload raises doubts about how well his body can hold up against a top-level opponent over the course of a full match.

Shelton’s Efficiency Stands Out

  • Alex Molcan has won 11 of his last 13 matches on clay.
  • He has a 3–2 record in tour-level semifinals.
  • Ben Shelton has won both of his clay semifinals.
  • He has won 21 of his last 22 matches vs outside Top 100 players.

This will be their first meeting.

Molcan Continues Clay Court Surge

Alex Molcan reached the semifinals in Munich with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win over Denis Shapovalov. He faced just one break point and converted three of nine chances in a controlled performance.

This marks his first tour-level semifinal in three years. After a slow start to the season with only one main-draw win in the first three months, he has found strong form on clay, winning 11 of his last 13 matches, including quarterfinal runs in Zadar Challenger and Bucharest.

Molcan’s resurgence is notable, as he was ranked outside the top 650 this time last year. Consistent results across ITF and Challenger circuits, along with his recent performances, have pushed him close to a return to the top 100.

He holds a 3-2 record in tour-level semifinals, with his last two losses at this stage coming against top players, Carlos Alcaraz in Hamburg 2022 and Andrey Rublev in Banja Luka 2023.

Shelton Edges Fonseca In Battle

Ben Shelton defeated Joao Fonseca 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals in Munich. He is now one step away from matching his run from last year at this event.

This is a much-needed result for Shelton after a difficult stretch. He suffered early exits during the Sunshine Double and missed a good opportunity in Houston, where fitness issues led to a quarterfinal loss.

Earlier in the season, he showed strong form with quarterfinal runs in Auckland and the Australian Open, along with a title in Dallas, and will now look to rediscover that level.

Shelton holds a 6-7 record in tour-level semifinals but remains perfect on clay at this stage, having won both of his previous semifinals on the surface in Munich 2025 and Houston 2024.

Verdict

With those physical concerns in mind, Ben Shelton holds the edge in this matchup. Shelton to win looks the most solid angle, and combining that with over 20.5 games also makes sense given Molcan’s ability to stay competitive for periods.
