Gilbert Burns vs Mike Malott UFC Predictions & Picks

Mike Malott is backed to stop Gilbert Burns for the biggest win of his career so far.

Burns is clearly over-the-hill at this point, and Malott can use his size advantage to impose his will on the Brazilian, beat him up and stop him with strikes.

  • Mike Malott is on a 3-fight win streak
  • Gilbert Burns has lost each of his last 4 fights
  • 11 of Mike Malott’s 13 career wins have been by stoppage
  • 4 of Gilbert Burns’ 5 career defeats have been by KO/TKO

Gilbert Burns Form

Gilbert Burns is the number 11 ranked welterweight contender with a professional record of 22-9 (6 KOs, 9 Subs).

Burns made his UFC debut back in the summer of 2014, and after a decent run at lightweight he made the move to 170lbs in August 2019.

It proved to be a smart move for ‘Durinho’ as he reeled off four consecutive victories to earn himself a shot at the welterweight championship.

He beat Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson on points, before following up a first-round knockout of Demian Maia with a unanimous decision success against former champion Tyron Woodley.

Burns failed to complete a rise to the top of the division though, as he was knocked out in the third round when he challenged Kamaru Usman in February 2021.

The 39-year-old Brazilian rebounded with a points success against Stephen Thompson, only to then suffer a unanimous decision defeat to Khamzat Chimaev.

He again responded quickly to a loss, submitting Neil Magny in the first round, and he then backed that up by defeating Jorge Masvidal on points in April 2023.

Burns has not won since though, with a unanimous decision loss to Belal Muhammad sparking a four-fight win streak.

Since then he has sandwiched a points loss to Sean Brady with knockout losses to Jack Della Maddalena and Michael Morales.

Mike Malott Form

Mike Malott in an unranked welterweight competitor with a professional record of 13-2 (5 KOs, 6 Subs) with 1 draw.

Malott earned his spot in the UFC in October 2012 when he made a successful appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, submitting Shimon Smotritsky in the first round.

The 34-year-old Canadian marked his UFC debut with a first-round knockout of Mickey Gall, and then backed that up with a first-round submission of Yohan Lainesse.

He made it three-in-a-row with a second-round submission win against Adam Fugitt, only to then suffer his first UFC loss in January 2024 when he was knocked out in the third round by Neil Magny.

Malott has not lost since though, kicked off a three-fight win streak with a decision victory over Trevin Giles.

He backed that up by knocking out Charles Radtke in the second round, before out-pointing Kevin Holland over three rounds last October.

Verdict

The odds feel a little insulting to Gilbert Burns, but we are not expecting the Brazilian to upset the odds here.

Mike Malott is the younger, bigger and fresher fighter, and we are backing him to deliver a stoppage win in this one.
