Shelton Targets Quarterfinal Return
Ben Shelton advanced to the second round in Munich with a hard-fought 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Emilio Nava. He fired 14 aces and saved three of five break points.
The American started the season strongly, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Auckland, along with winning the title in Dallas, but has shown signs of inconsistency and fitness concerns in recent weeks.
After early exits during the Sunshine Double, he missed a good opportunity in Houston, where he fell to Thiago Agustin Tirante in the quarterfinal.
Shelton has reached only three tour-level quarterfinals on clay in his career, two in Houston and one in Munich, where he went on to reach the final last year.
