Andrey Rublev has been one of the most inconsistent top players on tour this season, but there have still been periods where he has produced the level expected of a player of his caliber. This week's event in Bastad looks like an ideal opportunity for him to rediscover that form, given the strength of the field, a favorable draw, and his excellent record at the venue as a former champion.

Rublev Looks To Rebuild On Clay

  • Rublev holds a 2–1 record in opening-round matches at Bastad.
  • He has a 7–3 record against players outside the Top 100 over the last 12 months.
  • Pellegrino is looking to reach the second tour-level quarterfinal of his career.
  • He owns a 2–2 career record against Top 20 players.

Rublev Chasing Second Bastad Title

Andrey Rublev arrives in Bastad following a disappointing grass-court swing, where both of his tournaments ended in first-round defeats. He lost to Hubert Hurkacz in Halle before falling to Roman Safiullin in five sets at Wimbledon.

Despite those recent setbacks, the Russian enjoyed a solid first half of the season. His best results include a runner-up finish in Barcelona, semifinal appearances in Doha, Dubai, and Hong Kong, quarterfinals in Rome, and a fourth-round run at the French Open.

This is his fourth appearance in Bastad. Apart from his opening-round exit last year, Rublev has enjoyed plenty of success at the event, reaching the semifinals in 2022 before lifting the title in 2023.

Pellegrino Faces Another Tough Bastad Test

Andrea Pellegrino moved into the second round after defeating Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. He dropped serve once and converted four of the five break points he created.

The Italian produced a couple of breakthrough results earlier this season by reaching his maiden tour-level quarterfinal in Santiago and the fourth round in Rome. However, apart from those performances, he has struggled for consistency throughout the year.

Pellegrino also reached the second round in Bastad last season but was edged out by Tallon Griekspoor in a tight three-set contest. He now faces another difficult challenge at the same stage against one of the tournament's top contenders.

Verdict

If Rublev performs anywhere near his best level, he should be capable of making a dominant start to the tournament. Backing Rublev to win in straight sets and Rublev to cover the -3.5 games handicap are the selections that look most appealing.
