Daniel Merida Aguilar defeated Tallon Griekspoor in comfortable straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Montreal, 6-3, 6-1. He saved both break points he faced and won 83 percent of his first-serve points during the match.
The 21-year-old played his first tour-level matches only in March this year, and within five months he has produced impressive results at this level, including winning the title in Umag, reaching the final in Bucharest and the third round in Madrid.
These results, along with two other finals at Challenger level, helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 59 last month. With this impressive run, he will move as high as No. 40 in the rankings next week.

Tien Looks to Go Further Than Indian Wells
Learner Tien defeated Thiago Agustin Tirante in comfortable straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Montreal, 6-4, 6-4. He made a slow start and trailed by a break before taking control of the match to finish comfortably.
Tien arrived this week after disappointing losses in recent tournaments, winning only two matches across his last three events. However, he has regained confidence this week by winning three matches, including an impressive victory over Tommy Paul.
He has played five quarterfinals this year and lost three of them, including defeats at this stage in Indian Wells and the Australian Open. He also won the title in Geneva a few months ago.
This is only his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal, with his previous one coming against Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells earlier this year. With a more comfortable matchup ahead, Tien will be looking for a better result this week.
