Jakub Mensik has a terrific record against top-10 opponents at Masters tournaments, where he has consistently raised his level on the biggest stages. He has won six of his eight matches against top-10 players in this setting, highlighting his ability to deliver his best tennis against elite opposition.

Ben Shelton, meanwhile, has looked somewhat shaky in recent matches and has yet to find his most convincing level. Given Mensik's impressive record in these matchups, the Czech looks like an attractive underdog with a genuine chance of extending that remarkable record.

Mensik Finds His Rhythm in Montreal

Jakub Mensik secured his place in the quarterfinals after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. He fired 13 aces and won 81 percent of his first-serve points during the match.

This is a confidence-boosting result for the Czech, who arrived this week after disappointing early-round exits in his last three events, including Washington and Wimbledon.

The 20-year-old has four quarterfinal-or-better results on tour this year, including his best Grand Slam result at the French Open, along with a semifinal in Doha and the title in Auckland.

Mensik has a 1-2 record in Masters 1000 quarterfinals, with his only win coming during his title-winning campaign in Miami.

Shelton Builds Momentum With Three Straight Wins

Ben Shelton defeated Joao Fonseca in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Montreal, 6-3, 7-6. He was trailing by a break in each set before making a comeback to seal the match in straight sets.

This is his third consecutive straight-set win this week, and he will be relieved with the results considering 10 of his previous 11 matches had gone the distance.

Shelton has posted eight quarterfinal-or-better results on tour this year. He has lost at this stage five times and converted his other three quarterfinals into titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart.

The American has a 1-5 record in Masters 1000 quarterfinals, with his only win coming at the Canadian Open in Toronto last year, when he went on to lift the title. He will now be looking to repeat that success this week.

Verdict

Shelton's quality makes this difficult to call outright, but Mensik's Masters record against top-10 opposition makes him an intriguing underdog. Backing Jakub Mensik to win and a tiebreak to be played in the match both look like appealing options.
