Medvedev Responds After Recent Setbacks
Daniil Medvedev began his Madrid campaign with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 win over Fabian Marozsan. He had chances to finish the match in straight sets after leading by a break in the second set but was pushed into a decider.
It was an important response after two disappointing recent losses, including a 0-6, 6-4, 5-7 defeat to Francisco Cerúndolo in Miami and a 0-6, 0-6 loss to Matteo Berrettini in Monte Carlo.
Despite those setbacks, the Russian has still enjoyed a solid season with titles in Brisbane and Dubai, a final in Indian Wells, and a fourth-round run at the Australian Open, helping him return to the top 10.
Medvedev has reached at least the fourth round in each of his last four Madrid appearances. With a favorable next matchup, he will look to keep that streak going and strengthen his top-10 position.

Budkov Kjaer Stuns Shapovalov Easily
Nicolai Budkov Kjaer continued his breakthrough run in Madrid by defeating Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-1 to reach the third round. It is the biggest win of his career so far.
He is now on a four-match winning streak, including two qualifying wins. Even more impressive, he has lost serve only once all week and has not faced a single break point in either of his main-draw matches.
This is a huge step for the 19-year-old, who had won only one main-draw match on tour before this event and had never beaten a top-100 player in his career. This run will also take him to a new career-high ranking next week.
