Alexander Zverev has not always looked convincing this year, but he has still been highly effective, reaching at least the semifinals in all but one tournament he has played. That consistency, especially in a draw lacking several top names, puts him in a strong position in Madrid.

Zverev Holds Statistical Edge

  • Jakub Mensik has a 2–1 record in R16 matches at Masters events.
  • He owns a 9–9 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Alexander Zverev is on a seven-match winning streak in R16 matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 21–1 record against outside Top 20 players in Masters over the last 12 months.

Mensik Strengthens Madrid Campaign

Jakub Mensik defeated Karen Khachanov in tight straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, to move into the fourth round in Madrid. He fired 14 aces and never faced a break point in the match. He is now just one win away from matching his best result here, the quarterfinal in 2025.

The Czech has played only three round-of-16 matches on clay before and converted two of them into quarterfinals, in Umag in 2024 and here in Madrid last year. His only loss at this stage came against Hubert Hurkacz in Rome last year.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the season, posting three quarterfinal-or-better results along with a fourth-round run at the Australian Open. However, his early exit while defending points in Miami recently pushed him out of the top 20.

Mensik has converted three of his four Masters round-of-16 matches into quarterfinals, including one walkover, and he will look to use that confidence to go even deeper this week.

Zverev Keeps Masters Consistency Alive

Alexander Zverev moved into the fourth round after defeating Terence Atmane 6-3, 7-6 in straight sets. He dropped serve once, won 82% of his first-serve points, and also dealt with some fitness issues during the second set.

He holds a 5-3 record in Madrid round-of-16 matches. He converted his first five appearances at this stage into quarterfinals but has lost the last three in straight sets, including back-to-back defeats to Francisco Cerundolo in 2024 and 2025, and a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in 2023.

Apart from a second-round loss in Acapulco earlier this year, Zverev has reached at least the semifinal in every tour-level event since Vienna last season. However, the disappointment is that he has failed to convert any of those deep runs into titles.

Since the start of 2024, he has played 18 Masters round-of-16 matches and converted 13 of them into quarterfinals, including the last seven in a row. His most recent loss at this stage came here in Madrid last year.

Verdict

Jakub Mensik is capable of pushing this into tight sets with his serve. Zverev should come through, but not without resistance. Over 10.5 games in both the first and second sets, along with a tiebreak in the match, are outcomes that align well with this matchup.
