Hubert Hurkacz and Jaume Munar are both struggling for form and fitness at the moment, but Hurkacz appears to be in the slightly better position of the two. He has at least managed to stay competitive in most of his recent matches and has avoided the kind of heavy defeats Munar has suffered in recent weeks.

Hurkacz Seeks Clay Progress

  • Jaume Munar holds a 5–3 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He owns a 6–3 record against players outside the Top 50.
  • Hubert Hurkacz won 15 of his last 17 Grand Slam opening-round matches.
  • He has a 6–5 record against Top 50 players in 2026.

Munar Rebuilding After Injury Setback

Jaume Munar ended the 2025 season strongly by reaching the fourth round at both the US Open and Shanghai along with a semifinal run in Basel. Those results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 33.

The Spaniard carried that momentum into 2026 with quarterfinal appearances in Adelaide and Rotterdam. However, an arm injury suffered in Rotterdam interrupted his progress and kept him sidelined for nearly two months before returning in Barcelona.

Since his comeback, Munar initially struggled for rhythm but recently produced encouraging results with a semifinal run at the Valencia Challenger and a quarterfinal appearance in Geneva.

Munar has played at French Open eight times and cleared the opening round in five of those appearances. Notably, every time he won his first-round match, he also progressed beyond the second round.

Hurkacz Returns With Growing Confidence

Hubert Hurkacz returned from a long injury break with encouraging performances at the United Cup. However, he struggled to maintain that level on the ATP Tour and suffered a seven-match losing streak, including six opening-round exits.

Since the start of the clay season, though, the Pole has shown clear improvement by winning seven of his 11 matches. His better results include a third-round appearance in Monte Carlo and a runner-up finish at the Cagliari Challenger.

This will be Hurkacz’s ninth main-draw appearance at French Open. Half of his previous eight campaigns in Paris ended with opening-round defeats, including last year.

Verdict

Considering Hurkacz’s greater pedigree at the top level and the relatively better level he has shown recently, he looks to have the edge in this matchup. Backing Hurkacz to win and a tiebreak to be played both look like appealing options in this clash.
