Stan Wawrinka may be going through a rapid physical decline in recent years, but the level he has still managed to produce at times remains noticeably higher than what Jesper de Jong has shown recently. On top of that, Wawrinka brings enormous experience at this tournament as a former champion, which adds extra weight to his chances in this matchup.

Wawrinka Eyes Winning Return

  • Stan Wawrinka won only one main-draw match across six clay events this year.
  • He owns a 5–1 record against players outside the Top 100 this year.
  • Jesper de Jong holds a 2–0 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He has not won a tour-level main-draw match since the Shanghai Masters.

Wawrinka Looking For One More Deep Run

Stan Wawrinka began the season with encouraging performances at the United Cup and a third-round run at the Australian Open. However, his level has gradually declined since then.

The Swiss veteran has played six clay-court tournaments this year and managed only one main-draw victory, which came in Geneva last week. He has also dealt with back issues in recent weeks, including a withdrawal from qualifying in Rome.

Wawrinka has made 20 appearances at French Open and suffered opening-round exits five times, including last year. His best results in Paris were winning the title in 2015 and reaching the final in 2017.

De Jong Returns As Lucky Loser

Jesper de Jong enters the French Open main draw as a lucky loser this week. He defeated Fajing Sun and Liam Draxl in the opening qualifying rounds before losing to Michael Zheng in straight sets in the final qualifying round.

The Dutchman arrives in Paris during a disappointing stretch of form. Apart from a couple of quarterfinal appearances on the Challenger circuit, most of his last nine tournaments ended without a main-draw victory.

De Jong also recently dropped out of the top 100 rankings after failing to defend his semifinal points in Montpellier and third-round points in Rome.

This marks his third main-draw appearance at French Open, and he reached the second round in both of his previous visits. Overall, he owns a solid 4-2 career record in Grand Slam opening-round matches.

Verdict

Considering the experience gap and the current odds on offer, Wawrinka looks like a very appealing underdog option here. Backing Wawrinka to win the match and Wawrinka to win over 1.5 sets both stand out as attractive plays.
