Arthur Fils is unbeaten against players ranked outside the top 30 on hard courts this year. Despite dealing with recurring fitness concerns, he has remained highly competitive whenever he has taken the court.

Against Mariano Navone, who is far less comfortable on hard courts, the Frenchman should have enough quality to stay in control throughout the match.

Fils Looks To Bounce Back

  • Navone has never won more than two hard-court matches at a tour-level event.
  • He has won eight of his last 11 matches against Top 50 players.
  • Fils has failed to register multiple wins in his last three events.
  • He has a 19–4 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Navone Continues His Upset Run

Mariano Navone produced back-to-back upsets to reach the third round in Montreal, defeating Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 before following it up with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory over Valentin Vacherot.

The Argentine will be delighted with those performances after suffering a first-round exit in his only previous Canadian Open appearance in Toronto.

This is just the second time in his career that Navone has recorded multiple main-draw wins at a tour-level hard-court event. His previous best run on the surface came in Winston-Salem last year, where he reached the quarterfinals.

Fils Continues His Montreal Campaign

Arthur Fils defeated Zachary Svajda 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to reach the third round in Montreal. The Frenchman recovered from a 0-3 deficit in the opening set, fired 12 aces, and finished strongly with a dominant deciding set.

After returning from injury in February, Fils quickly rediscovered his form, reaching at least the quarterfinals in six of his first seven tournaments. However, a hip injury during the Rome Masters disrupted his momentum, and he has managed only one match win across his last three events before arriving in Montreal.

Fils reached the third round in Toronto last year before losing in three sets. He will now be looking to achieve his best result at the Canadian Open.

Verdict

Navone's preferred surface is clay, and he is unlikely to trouble Fils consistently in these conditions. Backing Arthur Fils to win in straight sets and Fils to cover the -3.5 games handicap both look like strong options.
