Pablo Carreno Busta's current fitness is a slight concern, but if he can perform at even 70% of his best and remain reasonably fit throughout the match, he should have too much quality for Daniel Vallejo on hard courts.

Carreno Busta has far greater experience and a much stronger record on the surface, while he also has an excellent history at this venue as a former champion with several quarter-final or better runs.

Carreno Busta Targets Another Strong Winston-Salem Start

  • Carreno Busta has a 7–2 record in opening-round matches at Winston-Salem.
  • He has a 25–8 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.
  • Daniel Vallejo has a 1–1 record in first-round matches at tour level on hard courts.
  • He has a 6–0 record against Spanish opponents.

Carreno Busta's Experience Faces a New Test

Pablo Carreno Busta struggled significantly on tour earlier this year despite producing notable results on the Challenger circuit.

However, the Spaniard has shown encouraging improvement at tour level in recent months, reaching the fourth round at the French Open and the second round at Wimbledon, Cincinnati and Umag. He will now be looking to build on those results this week.

This is his 10th appearance in Winston-Salem, where he owns a 7-2 record in opening-round matches. He also won the title here in 2016.

Vallejo's Tour-Level Rise Continues in Winston-Salem

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo is coming off a successful run in Cincinnati, where he reached the third round after straight-set wins over Kyrian Jacquet and Valentin Vacherot in the opening rounds.

Before that run, he had never won multiple main-draw matches at tour level in his career. That breakthrough should give him confidence as he looks to extend his success beyond clay.

He has reached four Challenger finals this year, along with a semifinal in Bastad and the third round in Madrid, highlighting his steady progress across different levels of the tour.

Verdict

Carreno Busta's fitness remains the main concern, but his experience, hard-court pedigree and proven success at this venue give him a clear edge. If his physical condition holds up, he should have enough quality to come through comfortably.
