Sebastian Gorzny has the advantage of playing at home and can be dangerous in these conditions, but he has not looked at his best since retiring a few weeks ago.

His performances have been shaky since then, including in the second round of qualifying in Winston-Salem, where he lost from a winning position. With those fitness and form concerns, this could be a difficult matchup for him against a relentless competitor like Cruz Hewitt.

Hewitt Looks To Build On His Early Tour Success

  • Sebastian Gorzny is making his tour-level debut this week.
  • He has an 11–5 record against highly ranked opponents in 2026.
  • Cruz Hewitt has a 1–0 record in first-round matches on tour.
  • He has a 4–2 record against American opponents this year.

Gorzny Gets His First Tour-Level Opportunity

Sebastian Gorzny won his first qualifying match against Marc Polmans but lost to Felix Balshaw in the final qualifying round. However, he received a lucky-loser spot to make his first main-draw appearance at tour level in Winston-Salem this week.

The 22-year-old has played only eight events this year, with five campaigns ending either in qualifying or the opening round. His best recent result came in Lexington, where he reached the Challenger quarterfinals.

His recent wins over Borno Gojo and Yu Hsiou Hsu in Lexington should give him confidence as he prepares to make his mark at tour level this week.

Cruz Hewitt Gets Another Chance to Shine

Cruz Hewitt made his tour-level debut in Washington a few weeks ago, where he produced impressive wins over Dusan Lajovic and Zachary Svajda in qualifying before defeating Marcos Giron in the opening round. He eventually lost to Alex de Minaur in the following round.

That impressive run from the 17-year-old helped him rise more than 200 places in the rankings and earned him another wildcard opportunity this week.

He has also reached eight quarterfinal-or-better results at lower levels, including a notable run to the quarterfinals at the Brisbane Challenger earlier this year.

Verdict

Gorzny's recent struggles make him difficult to trust, despite the home advantage. Hewitt's relentless style and ability to stay competitive should allow him to take advantage if Gorzny continues to struggle physically or fails to maintain his level.

Based purely on Gorzny's recent problems, Cruz Hewitt looks like the player to back here.
