Taylor Fritz has established himself as one of the most consistent grass-court players on the ATP Tour in recent years. This season has been no different, with the American reaching the finals in both Stuttgart and Halle before bringing that excellent form into Wimbledon. Defending a significant number of ranking points this fortnight has also added extra motivation, and he has looked fully focused from the opening round.

Lorenzo Sonego is a capable grass-court player in his own right, but he has struggled to match Fritz's consistency and level throughout this grass swing. Based on current form and overall ability on the surface, the American holds a clear advantage.

Fritz Eyes Another Deep Wimbledon Run

  • Fritz holds a 3–1 record in Wimbledon third-round matches.
  • He owns a 13–3 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
  • Sonego has a 2–1 record in Wimbledon third-round matches.
  • He has a 1–8 career record against Top 10 players at Grand Slams.

American Builds Winning Rhythm

Taylor Fritz moved into the third round at Wimbledon after defeating two players ranked outside the top 100 in back-to-back straight-set victories, beating Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5.

With this run, Fritz has improved his grass-court record this season to 9-2, highlighted by back-to-back runner-up finishes in Stuttgart and Halle over the past few weeks.

Despite falling short in both finals, the American will be pleased with his recent results after struggling with fitness issues before the grass swing. He played only a limited schedule and suffered several early exits between February and May before finding his rhythm again.

Fritz heads into this clash with a 3-1 career record in third-round matches at Wimbledon. Apart from his defeat at this stage in 2021, he has won his last three third-round matches here, including his semifinal run last year.

Italian Finds Timely Momentum

Lorenzo Sonego survived a marathon five-set battle against Gabriel Diallo, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Earlier in the week, he defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets to begin his campaign.

This is the first time Sonego has won multiple main-draw matches at any tournament this season. Before Wimbledon, he had played 10 events and won only five main-draw matches in total, highlighting his difficult start to the year.

The Italian has shown signs of improvement on grass after struggling for consistency during the opening months of the season. He will now look to build on this run and carry his momentum into the second week.

Sonego heads into this clash with a 2-1 career record in third-round matches at Wimbledon. His most recent appearance at this stage came last year, when he advanced to the fourth round.
