Taylor Fritz arrives in Montreal with some fitness concerns after struggling with an injury during his title-winning run in Washington. He has also had very little recovery time following that triumph, making the quick turnaround another factor to consider.

However, Thiago Agustin Tirante has his own physical concerns after retiring in Bastad last month and lacks the hard-court experience to consistently trouble a player of Fritz's caliber.

Fritz Seeks To Extend His Winning Form

  • Tirante has yet to register multiple main-draw wins at a tour-level hard-court event.
  • He has a 2–1 career record against Top 10 players.
  • Taylor Fritz has a 4–3 record in Canadian Open opening-round matches.
  • He has a 17–3 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.

Tirante Builds on Opening Win

Thiago Agustin Tirante defeated Duncan Chan 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 to reach the second round in Montreal. The Argentine trailed 2-4 in the deciding set before producing a strong comeback to seal the victory.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, highlighted by reaching the fourth round in Rome, the third round in both Madrid and the French Open, and the semifinals in Houston. Those results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 52 last month.

Tirante has cleared the opening round four times at tour-level hard-court events but has failed to progress beyond the second round on each occasion. He will be looking to break that trend this week.

Fritz Arrives as Washington Champion

Taylor Fritz finally captured his first title of the season by winning the Washington Open last week, ending a three-match losing streak in tour-level finals. That triumph should provide a major confidence boost heading into Montreal.

The American dealt with fitness issues during the clay swing, but he responded impressively after returning, reaching three finals since the start of the grass season and adding a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon.

This is Fritz's fourth appearance in Montreal. His best result came in 2022, when he reached the third round.

Verdict

While Fritz may not be at full fitness, the gap in quality and experience on hard courts should still be enough for him to extend his winning streak. Backing Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets and Fritz to cover the -3.5 games handicap.
