The Renegades won just four of their 10 regular season games to finish three games behind Houston in the division.
They opened the season with a 22-20 win against Vegas, only to then lose 23-14 in the first road game of the season in Houston.
Arlington struggled for consistency over the next several weeks as the offense spluttered, and that left them at 4-4 heading into their final two games.
The Renegades went close to becoming one of just two teams to beat the DC Defenders, ultimately losing 28-26 in overtime.
They then fell to a 25-9 defeat when they hosted Houston in their regular season finale, less than 24 hours after their postseason berth was confirmed.

Houston finished top of the South Division after compiling a 7-3 regular season record that saw them go 6-0 in division play.
The Roughnecks opened the season with a four-game win streak, kicking things off with a 33-12 win against Orlando.
They then downed Arlington 23-14 and San Antonio 22-13 at home, before heading to Orlando to beat the Guardians 44-16 in their road opener.
Houston’s momentum stalled after that though, as they lost three consecutive games against the best teams in the North – Seattle, DC and St Louis.
The Roughnecks stopped the rot with a 17-15 overtime win in San Antonio, and then secured home advantage for the South Division Championship Game with a 28-21 victory over Vegas.
That was followed by a 25-9 victory at Arlington last weekend that closed out their regular season campaign.
