Roman Andres Burruchaga arrives with the confidence of reaching the final last week, but his performances were not as convincing as the results suggest. Nuno Borges, meanwhile, returns to his home event with the backing of the local crowd and should be well suited to the conditions. With the support behind him and a more convincing all-round level, the Portuguese has a clear opportunity to capitalize.

Home Favorite Borges Eyes A Quarterfinal Push

  • Borges holds a 1–2 record in second-round matches at Estoril.
  • He has won seven of his last eight matches against players outside the Top 50.
  • Burruchaga has failed to win multiple matches in seven of his last eight events.
  • He owns a 4–5 record against Top 50 players.

Borges Builds Confidence in Estoril

Nuno Borges defeated Orlando Luz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the second round in Estoril. He fired five aces and won 86% of his first-serve points during the match.

The Portuguese has cleared the opening-round hurdle in Estoril three times before and has registered multiple main-draw wins there only once, reaching the quarterfinals in his most recent appearance in 2024.

Borges has reached four tour-level quarterfinals this season, with two of them coming recently after reaching the semifinals in Mallorca and the quarterfinals in Bastad last week. He will now look to carry that momentum into this week.

Burruchaga Continues Rise on Clay

Roman Andres Burruchaga defeated Stan Wawrinka in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to move into the second round in Estoril. He dropped his serve five times but broke his opponent on seven occasions.

The Argentine arrives with confidence after reaching the semifinals in Umag last week, a run that moved him close to his career-high ranking of No. 56.

Before that, Burruchaga struggled to build on the breakthrough results he produced earlier this season, which included reaching the final in Houston and two Challenger finals.

Verdict

Borges looks well placed to take control against an opponent who may be feeling the effects of a demanding week. Backing Nuno Borges to win in straight sets and Nuno Borges to cover the -3.5 games handicap are the strongest plays.
