LIV Golf Invitational Boston Preview & Picks
The LIV Golf Invitational Series continues to fracture the golfing world as more elite golfers join the controversial tour. Who will emerge the victor and pocket the large purse come Sunday?

Six new players have joined and will feature in Boston including Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Marc Leishman and Cameron Tringale.

Past and present major winners in the lineup include Smith, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson.

These are our selections for the title this weekend.

Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith had a remarkable 2021/22 season, claiming multiple tournament victories, including the first Major of his career.

Smith placed T9 at the CJ Cup, T15 at the Houston Open, and T4 at the RSM Classic before winning his first PGA Tour tournament of 2022 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The 29-year-old failed to make the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii but returned to form with a T4 place at the Saudi International. He finished T33 at the Genesis Invitational before securing his second tournament victory at the Players Championship.

Smith continued to play well on the PGA Tour, placing T3 at the Masters, MC at the RBC Heritage, T21 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T13 at the PGA Championship, T13 at the Memorial Tournament, T48 at the RBC Canadian Open, MC at the US Open, and a solid T10 at the Scottish Open.

At the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, the Australian charged the back-nine during the final round to win the tournament, his third this year.

He produced decent results in his subsequent two events, finishing T13 at the FedEx St Jude Championship and 20th at the Tour Championship last weekend.

Smith will be making his debut on the LIV Golf Invitational Series and is the man to beat in Boston as he has three wins under his belt this year, including a Major.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann has had an excellent season on the PGA Tour and comes into his debut LIV Golf Invitational Series tournament on the back of three solid results.

Niemann started very well, placing T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T8 at the Saudi International, and winning the Genesis Invitational before missing the cut at the Honda Classic.

The 23-year-old played solid golf after that victory, finishing T22 at the Players Championship, T35 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T35 at the Masters, T12 at the RBC Heritage, T25 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T23 at the PGA Championship, and T3 at the Memorial Tournament.

The Chilean became erratic on the golf course, finishing T47 at the US Open, MC at the Travelers Championship, T16 at the Genesis Scottish Open, and T53 at the Open Championship before regaining his touch by placing at the FedEx St Jude Championship, T8 at the BMW Championship and T11 at the Tour Championship last weekend.

Niemann has been showing encouraging signs he is ready to lift another trophy and has every chance to do so at the International Golf Club.

Paul Casey

Paul Casey has had an interrupted season due to an injury, but he has performed well when he has been on the golf course.

Casey missed the cut at the Shriner's Children's Open before placing T25 at the CJ Cup, T16 at the SMBC Singapore Open, T12 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T24 at the Saudi International and T15 at the Genesis Invitational.

The Englishman did not play well at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finishing 72nd but bounced back to his best with an excellent 3rd at the Players Championship.

The 45-year-old was then sidelined from March until July with a back injury before returning to the fairways at the Open Championship, where he finished T53.

On his debut at the LIV Golf Invitational in Bedminster, he produced a credible T6 result.

Casey has solid form when he has played this year and can feature prominently in Massachusetts.

Harold Varner III

Harold Varner III had a splendid start to his year, finishing T22 at the American Express before heading to Asian Tour, where he captured the Saudi International.

His next two starts were poor, missing the cut at the Phoenix Open and Genesis Invitational before finding his touch with an excellent T6 at the Players Championship.

The American continued to produce solid results, placing T57 at the Valspar Championship, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T23 at the Masters, T3 at the RBC Heritage, and T4 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The 32-year-old's form was inconsistent in his subsequent seven tournaments, finishing T48 at the PGA Championship, T27 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T13 at the RBC Canadian Open, MC at the US Open, T43 at the Travelers Championship, T28 at the Open Championship, and MC at the Wyndham Championship.

He produced no fireworks at the two season-ending FedEx Cup playoff events, missing the cut at the FedEx St Jude Championship and finishing T48 at the Tour Championship.

Varner III is making his debut at the LIV Golf Invitational Series, but he will be challenging for the title if he can replicate the form he displayed earlier in the year.

Format

An invitational field of 48 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $120,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of the traditional 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 12 four-man team format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Smith has done little wrong all year and has claims for the title on his LIV Golf debut in Massachusetts.

Niemann has been playing consistently well and will fancy his chances to win his second title of the year in Boston.

Casey did well on debut and offers an excellent each-way bet at the International Golf Club.

Varner III is the long-shot value bet as he has won this year and has the game to take home the trophy.
