Arizona ended the regular season riding a five-game win streak that propelled them to 9-3 and earned them a Bowl invite.
The Wildcats opened with back-to-back non-conference wins, and then began their Big 12 schedule with a 23-17 victory at home to Kansas State.
They failed to build on that though, as they lost 39-14 at Iowa State, and they were then unable to back up a 41-13 blowout of Oklahoma State as they fell 33-27 to BYU and 31-28 at Houston.
Those losses all-but ended Arizona’s conference title hopes, but they did at least end the season on a high as a 52-17 demolition of Colorado proved to be the start of a five-game tear.
The Wildcats went on to beat Kansas 24-20, Cincinnati 30-24, Baylor 41-17 and Arizona State 23-7.
SMU Form
SMU missed out on the ACC Championship game as they suffered a defeat on the final day of the regular season to finish 8-4 overall.
The Mustangs began the season ranked in AP’s top 25, but they split four non-conference games to lose standing before they finally kicked off their ACC slate.
They raced out of the blocks in the conference though, beating Syracuse 31-18 and Stanford 34-10 at home, before heading to Clemson to take down the Tigers, 35-24.
SMU’s run was halted by a 13-12 loss to Wake Forest, but they responded by knocking off Miami at home 26-20, and backed that up with wins over Boston College, 45-13, and Louisville, 38-35.
However, a 38-35 defeat at Cal on the final day ended their conference championship hopes and kept them out of the college football playoffs.
Verdict
Arizona’s rough start wrecked their Big 12 hopes, but their response over the final few weeks was strong.
The offense was rolling as they reeled off five straight wins, so we are backing the Wildcats to make it six-in-a-row.
