The Panthers opened the season with four consecutive non-conference wins, and took their streak to seven games with three conference successes.
They won 34-24 at North Carolina, before heading home to down California 17-15 and Syracuse 41-13.
Pittsburgh have not won since though, as a 48-25 defeat to SMU proved to be the start of a five-game losing run.
The Panthers then lost 24-19 to Virginia and 25-20 to Clemson at home, before heading out on the road for defeats to Louisville, 37-9, and Boston College, 34-23.
Toledo Form
Toledo finished the regular season with back-to-back defeats, but a 7-5 record ensured they earned a Bowl Game invite.
The Rockets went 3-1 in non-conference action to start the season, but struggled for consistency in the early stages of their MAC schedule.
They split the first four games of their conference schedule, but finally strung together a couple of MAC wins in the first half of November.
Toledo went out on the road to down Eastern Michigan 29-28, before returning home to beat Central Michigan 37-10.
The Rockets failed to make it three-in-a-row as they were beaten 24-7 by Ohio, and they then lost their regular season finale at Akron, 21-14.
Verdict
Pittsburgh’s form collapsed in the second half of the season, but we like their chances here.
They have the superior defense and we expect that to be the difference as they force key turnovers and make some crucial stops.
