Virginia Tech enter the 2025 season looking to better a 2024 campaign that saw them lose seven of their 13 games, including a Bowl game.
The Hokies opened the season by going 2-2 in non-conference play, and then dropped their ACC opener in heart-breaking fashion as they were beaten 38-34 in Miami.
They rallied over the next few weeks though, kick-starting their conference campaign by beating Stanford 31-7, Boston College 42-21 and Georgia Tech 21-6.
Virginia Tech’s run was finally ended by a 38-31 defeat to Syracuse, and their fading hopes of a conference championship appearances were ended by a 24-14 loss to Clemson and a 31-28 defeat to Duke.
The Hokies wrapped up the regular season by beating Virginia 37-17, but their final outing of the season ended in defeat as they lost 24-10 to Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
South Carolina Form
South Carolina come into the new campaign looking to challenge for a place in the College Football Playoffs.
The Gamecocks’ hopes of playing beyond the regular season were ended early last year as they failed to build on a 31-6 win over Kentucky in their conference opener.
They lost their next three games against SEC opposition, losing 36-33 to LSU, 27-3 to Ole Miss and 27-25 at Alabama, ruling them out of contention.
South Carolina showed their resolve though and reeled off four straight wins over SEC teams, including upset victories against Vanderbilt, 28-7, and Missouri, 34-30.
The Gamecocks then closed out the regular season with a 17-14 win at Clemson, only to lose 21-17 to Illinois in the Citrus Bowl.
Verdict
Virginia Tech underwent a host of changes on both sides of football in the offseason.
