Detroit Lions Form
Detroit are appearing in the NFC Championship Game for only the second time in franchise history.
The Lions came into the season with high expectations and made a statement on opening night as they beat defending champions Kansas City, 21-20, at Arrowhead.
They lost a week later, but they responded with a four-game win streak and boasted a 7-2 record heading into late November.
Detroit stumbled on Thanksgiving with a 29-22 defeat at home to Green Bay, and they tehn suffered a 28-13 defeat when they visited Chicago in early December.
However, that did not derail the Lions on their playoff quest and they won three of their final four games to finish 12-5 and win the NFC North.
That earned the Lions their first home playoff game for over 30 years and they won it, beating the Los Angeles Rams and former quarterback Matthew Stafford, 24-23.
Detroit then fended off a late rally from Tampa Bay in the Divisional round to book their place in the conference championship with a 31-23 victory.
San Francisco 49ers Form
San Francisco are once again in the NFC Championship Game, having won 13 of their 18 games this season.
The 49ers raced out of the blocks with a five-game win streak, but saw their form shockingly nose-dive before the bye week as they lost three straight.
They emerged from the bye week with a 34-3 blowout of Jacksonville on the road, and that proved to be the start of a six-game win streak.
San Francisco’s red-hot run saw them destroy the team that beat them in last season’s NFC Championship Game, the Philadelphia Eagles, 42-29.
They also knocked off a couple of division rivals to ensure they would end the regular season with the NFC West crown.
San Francisco dropped two of their final three games, but their 12-5 record was enough to not only clinch the division, but also secure the number one seeding and homefield advantage.
The 49ers enjoyed a bye on Wildcard weekend, and when they returned to action for the Divisional Round they scored a late touchdown to beat Green Bay 24-21.
Verdict
San Francisco are rightly favorites, but their spread record at home is poor and they could be without Deebo Samuel.
This line feels disrespectful towards a Detroit team in good form and with a very healthy knack for covering, so we are taking the Lions and the points in the NFC Championship Game.
