Florida head back out on the road having failed to complete the series sweep, losing at home to Carolina on Monday.
The Panthers made a dream start to the Eastern Conference Finals as they went out on the road and won back-to-back games in Carolina, 5-2 and 5-0.
They then opened up a three-game lead with a 6-2 success in their home opener, only to squander their chance at a sweep with the 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes.
Florida entered the conference finals on the back of a seven-game series with Toronto, and having gone 8-4 across the first two rounds of the postseason.
The Panthers made a dominant start as they went out on the road to win 6-2 and 2-0 at Tampa Bay.
They then responded to a 5-1 home loss with 4-2 and 6-3 wins to wrap up the series in five games.
Florida made a rough start to the second round as they lost back-to-back games in Toronto, 5-4 and 4-3, but they bounced back at home with 5-4 (OT) and 2-0 wins.
The Panthers then took the fifth game, 6-1 on the road, before bouncing back from a 2-0 home defeat with a series-clinching 6-1 win in Toronto.
Carolina Hurricanes Form
Carolina return home knowing they must follow up Monday’s win in Florida or their season will come to an end.
The Hurricanes endured a nightmare start to the series as they lost back-to-back home games against the Panthers, losing 5-2 and 5-0.
They then found themselves on the brink of elimination as they lost 6-2 on the road, but they rallied on Monday with a 3-0 victory, forcing a fifth game in this series.
Carolina entered this series having been on a dominant run in the postseason, winning eight of their first 10 games.
The Hurricanes made a fast start as they beat New Jersey 4-1 and 3-1 to take control of that first-round series with the Devils.
They then bounced back from a 3-2 overtime loss on the road with a 5-2 victory in New Jersey, before clinching the series with a 5-4 overtime win at home.
Carolina gained an early advantage in the second round too, as they went out on the road to beat Washington 2-1 in overtime.
The Hurricanes lost 3-1 in second meeting, but responded by reeling off 4-0, 5-2, and 3-1 victories to wrap up the series in five games.
Verdict
Florida wasted their chance on Monday, but we still expect them to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Panthers have been the better team for the majority of this series and they have been the NHL’s ‘road warriors’ in the playoffs, so we are sticking with them.
