Alex de Minaur began his Washington title defense with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. The Australian won 79% of his first-serve points and saved five of the seven break points he faced during the match.
De Minaur won only four matches across seven tournaments between Acapulco and Rome, but he has rediscovered his best form in recent months. His resurgence includes a runner-up finish in Hertogenbosch, a semifinal appearance in Hamburg, and a fourth-round run at Wimbledon.
He has cleared the opening-round hurdle only twice in his previous five appearances in Washington, but on both occasions he went all the way to the final, finishing runner-up in 2018 and lifting the title in 2025. He will be hoping to continue that trend this week.

Hewitt Continues Dream Washington Debut
Cruz Hewitt advanced to the second round after defeating Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4. The 17-year-old did not face a single break point and won an impressive 83% of his first-serve points.
Before this week, Hewitt had never played a tour-level main-draw match. The victory has lifted him by more than 200 places in the rankings, and he is set to make his top-400 debut next week.
The Australian has already posted seven quarterfinal or better finishes on the lower-level circuit this season. Apart from a Challenger quarterfinal in Brisbane, his other six deep runs came at M25 or lower-level ITF events.
